The Cave Many years of rainfall may have combined with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form a weak carbonic acid, that slowly dissolved the limestone rocks of Gasparee. This resulted in the formation of a series of underground passages and caves that today form the Gasparee Caves. The Big Cave or Blue Grotto, is the main cave open to the public, although it’s just one of a network of underground caverns. It is half an acre in size and ends in a pool of clear blue-green sea water varying with the tides. Algae on some of the rock surface gives a tie dye effect. Natural skylights showcase the stalagmites and stalactites.
