Chaguaramas
is recognized as a special economic zone within the larger economy of
Trinidad and Tobago. This unique position is based on the following
regional attributes. The
Tourism Master Plan positions Chaguaramas as one of the main anchors of
tourism in Trinidad. The marine topography in certain areas of the South
Shore is particularly suited to large deep-hulled ships and enhances the
opportunities for cruise tourism. The
region is designated as a National Park reflecting the rich endowment of
ecological, historical and archeological resources. In order to formalize and distil these attributes into clear development initiatives and determine, the development capacity of the region, formal development planning commenced in early 1998. The result is the CHAGUARAMAS MILLENNIUM DOORWAY Development programme. |

LEASES
The Authority's acting as landlord, is empowered to grant leases for lands and buildings located on the peninsula. Applications for leases are reviewed under the Tenancy Assessment System. This system derived from the CDA's Leasing Policy, ensures transparency and objectivity in assessing applications for leases. The system is based on six evaluation criteria, which, are biased against 'smokestack" industries and favours environmentally sensitive development of the tourism, knowledge based, and marine industry sectors

| The Millennium Doorway Development programme has as its main goal, the transformation of the CDA, within ten years, from a moribund, and uneconomic organization to a vibrant profitable entity, by the implementation of phased interactive projects, consistent with the mandate contained in its enabling legislation – The Chaguaramas Development Act. | |||
