The Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) has commenced a ‘Work experience Programme’ for students from the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Division of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). This programme forms part of an overall collaborative effort   between the Tucker Valley Farm and tertiary level institutions. The programme is intended to provide students with practical hands-on work experience at the 200-acre commercial/demonstration farm at Tucker Valley.

The Work experience Programme is instrumental in exposing a wide cross-section of students involved in agriculture to  best practices in the agricultural techniques utilized at the Tucker Valley Farm. Under the Programme students are assigned to a two-week training programme and are exposed to various aspects of farm operations, including planting, cultivation of crops utilizing greenhouse, grow-box and conventional technology and  post-harvest operations. To date a total of forty-four (44) students have participated in the programme.

In his remarks to the participants at the orientation ceremony, Project Manager, Mr. Fayaz Shah said that the ‘programme will be ongoing. He commended the initiative and hailed it as a good opportunity to expose young people to the concept of agri-business at a time when government is taking steps to transform the agricultural sector. In addition to this initiative the technical staff at the Tucker Valley Farm is also collaborating with UTT on the use of vermiculture in farm operations.

The CDA was mandated by Cabinet to implement the Tucker Valley Farm. In November 2008, management achieved its first major milestone with the harvesting of the first crop within the planned timeframe. To date cucumber, sweet pepper, corn, sweet potato, cassava, lettuce, bodi, salad beans, cantaloupe and radish have been harvested at the farm.

CDA’s General Manager Judith Mark stated that CDA is pleased to be the implementor of this agricultural initiative which supports the Authority’s mandate to develop Chaguaramas as a mixed-use destination. She indicated that some of CDA’s future projects will see enhanced synergies between agriculture, tourism and entertainment.

The concept of agricultural tourism is receiving increasing attention globally. “ The involvement in the agriculture sector supports the development of the Chaguaramas peninsula in a manner consistent with the development pillars identified in Vision 2020”.
