The eastern side comprising three acres was leased to the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port of Spain in 1922. It was later purchased by the Crown in 1946. The island was used as a resort by the successive Governors of the territory. The western portion which comprises eight and three quarter acres was leased to Barytes and Minerals limited with effect from 1953, for a period of twenty-Five years, with an option of renewal for a further term of twenty five years, for the purpose of quarrying limestone.
