GASPAR GRANDE HISTORICAL EVENTS

 

Historical Dates

1791 - 17th, September, Don Jose Maria Chacon granted the islands of Patos, Huevos and Monos to the Cabildo  to boost the towns' funds. The island of Chacachacare had beforehand been granted to Don Gerado Carry, who leased out various sections of it at yearly rents.

1796 - French pirates hid out at ConCair Bay, presently Winners Bay. 

1797 - Two Forts were erected on the eastern side of the Island, one at Goodwill Bay on the sea front. The second fort was erected on the highest point of the island overlooking Bombshell Bay.

1839 - the British government commenced an agenda of recruiting Indian labourers in Calcutta to be sent to Trinidad and British Guiana, now Guyana. They bound themselves to labour as indentured labourers for a set amount of years on the plantations

1912 - Convicts from Carrera were used to cut mangrove wood on the Tucker Valley Estate and on the 2nd April, 1912, the governor sanctioned the use of prisoners to cut mangrove wood in Mon Jalous Estate.

1920 - 17th May, Mac Kenzie and company applied for a lease of Cronstadt island or a fraction of the island, for the intention of operating a quarry.

1922 - 7th March, the governor approved a deed leasing 8 acres and 3 roads for an era of 10 years.

1922  - Lepers were transferred from Port-of-Spain to Chacachacare.

1925 - There was a whaling Station at Point Baleine in the northwestern point of Gaspar Grande  island.   

1940 - 10th October, a United States mission arrived in Trinidad on the USS St. Louis. They had arrived in relation to the agreement of 2nd September, 1940, regarding naval and air bases.

1941 - February 23rd, the government formed a resettlement group to facilitate the villagers.

1941 - On March 14th, the last 25 families in the district called Nicholas were specified three months to find other homes. By the start of December 1941, Stubles Bay was sealed off and later the same month Teteron Bay. Notices  were handed to Tetron residents in mid-December. Several of the residents of Nicholas and Tetron Bay were resettled in Carenage. Others moved to Diego Martin and Port-of-Spain, and especially to St. James.

1942  - Chaguaramas became a functional military base. Homes had all been demolished; beach clubs and holiday homes were closed down.

1943 -1944 - Chaguaramas base was a full military area with the North/West peninsula strictly prohibited to the public.
