The
Chaguaramas Peninsula and the off shore islands essentially comprise the
western tip of the Northern Range mountain system of Trinidad and
consequently, over seventy percent (70%) of the region consist of very
steep slopes. The land rises over 515 metres (1700 ft.) at Morne Catherine
on the mainland, and over 270 metres on the island of Monos. The entire
region is characterized by hills that drop precipitously to the sea on the
north and ridges with steep-sided valleys radiating in all other
directions.
Flat
land in the region is generally associated with the bays that have been
formed along the indented coastlines. These bays occur along the southern
coasts. A most significant exception to this pattern however, is the wide
expanse of flat land in the Tucker Valley. |

The
Peninsula extends five and a half miles from East to West, and three and a
half miles from North to South at its widest point. The area of the
peninsula is approximately 12,000 acres (4,858 hectares).
The
island of Gaspar Grande and Gasparillo are located just south of the
western end of the peninsula. The islands of Monos, Huevos and Chacacahare
extend westward from the western extremity of the peninsula the form of a
chain, with narrow channels (bocas) separating then from each other. |
